Some Turkish Universities Still Insist On Enforcing Bans On Wearing The Hijab

In the 2011-2012 school year, several universities in Turkey are still imposed a ban on the veil which had been abolished by the Board of Higher Education (Yok) in the year 2010.

University has gradually been adopting new rules that allow headscarves worn in universities since the ban was abolished in 2010.

Recent developments include the removal of the headscarf ban on Student Selection and Placement of students this summer and the permissibility of students to complete their registration in September and then by wearing a headscarf.

However, some colleges / universities still allows professors to reject students who wear headscarves to go to class.

Most of the universities, such as the Middle East Technical University, Ankara (ODTÜ), Hacettepe, Gazi, Ankara, Başkent and Atılım, allowing the students covered entrance to campus, but it depends on the attitude of faculty deans and professors, and students are not always allowed to enter to a class or a particular office by wearing a headscarf.

President Yok, Yusuf Ziya Ozcan issued a statement in March 2010 and then the college warned that continuing the ban headscarves if they insist on this position, will receive Yok investigation. Ozcan stated: "Students can not be expelled out of the classroom because of the veil, and if there are lecturers who insist expel students who veiled, a formal report should be prepared and sent to the Yok."

Assistant Professor Yesim Yalcin Mendi, a lecturer at the faculty of agriculture Cukurova University in Adana, said in an interview conducted September 28 that he did not allow students with headscarves into the classroom and she specifically asks students to explain where they live or with whom they live in order to find out whether they live in a place which is funded by religious organizations. Mendi explained that the rector of the university allows us to make our own decisions about students who are veiled. "And my decision not to bring them into my classroom." *   Source: EraMuslim.com
