The Hijab

The Hijab

http://hijab-dress.blogspot.com/
Nowadays, the general perspective of the common folk, with regards to the Hijab, is a totally unguided, misleading vision of an oppressive degradation of women, where individuals are forced to cover themselves and reduced to nothingness in society.

This idea is based on misconceptions which in effect hides and distorts the truth behind the veil!

The first thing we must understand is the concept of Hijab. The literal meaning of the word Hijab is to veil, partition or place a barrier between something. This does not solely refer to clothing and does not exclusively address women.

In Surah Nur of the Holy Qur’an, the command for Hijab is first directed toward the men then to the women. Allah (SW) says:

“Say (O Muhammad) to the believing men: lower your gaze and protect your modesty that is more pure for you…
And Say (O Muhammad) to the believing women: lower your gaze and protect your modesty and do not openly reveal your beauty (apart from to your mahrams)…”

In the context of the above verses, the Hijab initially starts with the lowering of the gaze. Muslim men and women are commanded to lower their gaze and not to look at the opposite gender. This reduces the possibility of any bad thoughts towards an individual which is a sin and the first step towards bigger sins. In this case, there is no physical barrier but a mental or invisible veil created by lowering the gaze.

The next part of the verse commands the Muslims to protect their modesty. This includes dressing in accordance to the Islamic dress code and refraining from all forms of lewd behaviour. This keeps the mind, body and soul free from sinful behaviour and promotes internal harmony as well as a healthy atmosphere of respect and cohesion in society.

The Islamic dress code consists of wearing clothing which fits the following criteria.

Extent: The minimum extent for men is from the naval to knees. For women, the compulsory amount covers the whole body excludes the hands, feet and face. Many Scholars consider the veiling of the face to be necessary because the above Qur’an verse states ‘Do not openly reveal your beauty’ and most of the beauty of a woman lies in the face.

Revealing: The clothes should not be transparent or tight which reveals the shape of the body. This is the case for both genders.

Dress type: The clothes should not be of the opposite gender. This means that men should not wear clothes that resemble women’s clothes and vice versa. The clothes (inc. jewellery) should not resemble those of other religions (e.g. wearing a cross).

Glamorous: The clothes should not be so glamorous or extravagant that they attract the opposite gender.

The criteria of the Hijab are such that it protects a woman from negative elements in society whilst promoting a healthy respect from all areas of society. This modesty, piety and morality are prevalent in society where Muslim men and women are allowed to wear the Hijab and to follow their way of life.

The myth of the Hijab being a tool of oppression was recently challenged when women of all ages and backgrounds began adopting the Hijab and defending their right to wear the Hijab. This was in the face of criticism by many political figures in discrediting the Hijab but it illustrated that far from being a tool of oppression it is a tool of liberation.

The Order for Hijab in the Quran

The Order for Hijab in the Quran

The Holy Quran has ordered women to cover themselves in some situations.
"And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what emerge thereof. And let them wear their head coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments..."
(Surah Nur 24:31)

It is also mentioned in Surah Ahzab,
"O Prophet! Say to your wives and daughters and the women of the believers that they let down upon them their over garments, this will be more proper, that they may be known and thus they will not give trouble. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
(Surah Ahzab 49:59)

In the same chapter, Allah says:
"O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other of the women, if you will be on your guard, then be not soft in (your) speech, lest he whose heart has a disease yearn and speak a good word."
(Surah Ahzab 49:32)

Another verse states,
"And when you ask them (the wives of the Prophet) any goods, ask of them from behind a curtain, this is purer for your hearts and (for) their hearts."
(Surah Ahzab 49:53)

In the above verses, the Muslim woman is ordered to veil herself. She must not come before namehram without Hijab. She should dress in such a manner that strange men do not get an opportunity to glance at those parts of her body which arouse passion; and thus make her an object of desire. It is the responsibility of a woman to assume such poise and behaviour that she does not excite a man's passions. Even a glance of lust can infatuate a man and a seemingly harmless encounter eventually lead to mischief and corruption in society, destroying entire families. In Iran, during the rule of the Shah when the law of Hijab had been revoked, the cases of fornication increased sharply. Every day many cases related to sexual crimes were heard in the courts of law. Every month many married mothers used to forsake their homes to enter into a perverse life of illicit sex. Five thousand such parents established a novel township outside the city of Tehran. The condition steadily deteriorated and came to a stage that every day approximately seven infants were found abandoned in the streets of Tehran, as reported by the commissioner. It is obvious that illicit children born as a result of fornication, whose parentage is not established, cannot create a position for themselves and are a burden to society. Due to the absence of Hijab, adultery and fornication became common and thousands of chaste women become immoral. One of the highly effective ways of protecting the society from the sin of adultery is that women wear hijab and ward off the evil glances of sensuous men.

2. Looking at the Namehram

The women are also ordered not to look at namehram men, and the men are similarly warned.

It is ordered in Surah Nur,
"Say to the believing men that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is aware of what they do."
(Surah Nur 24:30)

The Poisonous Arrow of Satan

It is narrated from Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s.):
"An evil glance is one of the poisonous arrows of Satan. Many of such glances becomes a cause of prolonged jealousy."
(Wasaelush Shia)

Fornication of Organs

Both Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) and Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s.) have informed,
"There is no man who is not to some extent guilty of fornication. The fornication of the eyes is the evil glance, the kiss is the fornication of lips and touching a namehram woman is the fornication of hands."
(Wasaelush Shia)

It is also recorded that,
"Those who look at a namehram woman with an evil intention and fill their eyes with this sight (that is they look for a long time) Allah will, on the day of Qiyamat fill (pierce) their eyes with burning rods. They will continue in this way till Allah completes the hearing of the cases of all the people. Only after that will He order them to be thrown into Hell."
(Wasaelush Shia)

In the Chains of Fire with Iblees

That person who embraces a namehram woman will be tied with chains, together with Iblees on the day of Qiyamat. These chains shall be of fire and both of them shall be tossed into Hell together. The following are also the words of the tradition:
"One who glances at a woman, but instantly looks away at the sky or turns his gaze down; before he could remove his gaze fully, Allah marries him to a black-eyed houri and he creates such a freshness of belief in his heart that he is extremely delighted."
(Wasaelush Shia)

It is reported from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) that he said;
"The wrath of Allah is very severe upon the married woman who apart from her husband sees another namehram man with a prolonged glance. When this woman does this, Allah the mighty invalidates all her good deeds and does not give her any rewards."
(Behaarul Anwaar)

A few traditions mention that looking at a woman in hijab is also not allowed. Although it is a generally considered a makrooh act. Although there are numerous traditions that denounce glancing at namehrams these shall suffice for our purpose.

Alone in the Company of Namehram

It is Haraam for a stranger or namehram man to remain alone in company of a namehram woman when there is a risk of committing a sin, even though they may be busy in worship. In the same way women are ordered not to stay in company of namehram men when there is a chance of sinful act.

The Holy Prophet ( s.a.w.s.) says:
"One who believes in Allah and the Day of Judgement does not remain in a place where (even) the sound of breathing of the namehram women is perceived."

Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s.) said:
"When the Prophet (a.s.) took allegiance from the women he told them to take an oath that they shall not sit alone in company of namehram men."
(Wasaelush Shia)

A lonely place means the one where there is no chance of anyone else entering or coming. Like a room, the door of which is locked from inside. Or a place not frequented by people.

Islam has prescribed severe penalty for a serious offence like adultery. Some of the aspects are given in the points mentioned below.

1) If a person commits an incestuous fornication he is to be killed according to Islamic laws.

2) If one sees that a stranger is fornicating with his wife, then he can kill both of them if he considers himself safe in doing so. But if he does not feel safe or if he does not wish to kill them, then apparently his wife is not prohibited for him.

3) If a Kafir commits adultery with a Muslim woman, he is to be killed according to shariat. Similarly, if a Muslim is punished thrice for fornication and is again proved guilty for the fourth time, he is to be executed.

4) If the person is sane, major, and legally married, and has a wife with whom he could establish sexual relation whenever he wants, and inspite of this he commits fornication with another sane, mature woman, he has to be stoned to death according to the Islamic law. And according to some Mujtahids, he must first be given a hundred lashes.

5) If a man does not fulfill the conditions listed in the above point, and if he commits fornication with a woman then his penalty according to Islamic law is a hundred lashes. Similarly, the married woman who willingly commits fornication should be stoned to death. If she is unmarried, then the penalty for her is a hundred lashes.

"As for the fornicatress and the fornicators, flog each other of them, (giving) a hundred lashes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day, and let a party of believers witness this chastisement." (Surah Nur 24:2)

After quoting the above ayat, the Journal of Anjuman-e-Tablighat-e-Islam writes:
Two points are derived from this. The first is that the punishment of the adulterer is carried out in the presence of other people. This will be a warning and a lesson to them. They will be terrified of committing the same sin after witnessing the horror of the punishment.

Another point, although its truth is not established, is that the punishment acts as a cure for the diseases of the sinner. It could be that due to the hundred lashes, the bodies of the sinners are so much heated that the germs that have entered their bodies are annihilated before they could multiply and spread.

One more point to be noted is that the germs of disease like syphilis etc. are not confined only to those who commit fornication. The spouse of the fornicator may also contract these diseases. Marriage with an adulterer is therefore detestable and is discouraged. If an adulterer man marries an adulteress woman, an innocent person is not victimised, but their deeds will definitely affect their progeny adversely. Their future generations will be contaminated with the evil of their sin and there will be some deformity or the other in their progeny. It is for this very fact that the religion of Islam says;
"The fornicator shall not marry any but a fornicatress or idolatress, and (as for) the fornicatress, none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; and it is forbidden to the believer."
(Surah Nur 24:3)

When Adultery is Proved According to Shariat

It must be clarified that the penalty for adultery could be imposed when the sin is proved from the viewpoint of Shariat. As it has been stated earlier, adultery is only proved if the conditions necessary for it are fulfilled. One of the conditions is that all the four just witnesses should testify unanimously as to the time and place of the crime. They must also know the woman by sight. Otherwise, there arises the possibility that the person who performed the sexual act with the woman may have been her husband.

Two Important Points

1) If a person commits adultery with a bachelor woman or the woman who is not in the iddah-e-rajai (the waiting period after divorce in which the husband can resume relation with her without another nikah), he can later marry her. But if she is married or in iddah-e-rajai, and he has had a sexual intercourse with her, he can never ever marry her legally. She is Haraam for this man forever. Even if the husband dies or divorces, she cannot legally marry the person who has committed adultery with her when she was married with another man.

2) If a man commits fornication with a woman, then her mother and daughter become Haraam for this man. That is, he can never ever marry them but they are not counted among his mehram women. Similarly, the father of the man with whom a woman has committed adultery becomes Haraam for her. There are minor differences of opinion among the Mujtahids in these problems. Any one who wishes to study further should refer to the knowledgeable jurists.

The opponents of Islam take objection to the law of Islam and support the sexual ethics of the West. They praise the sexual freedom of these countries and say that the Europeans and Americans are not hypocrites and express whatever feelings they have, freely and openly. They say that sexual desire is the legitimate desire of all human beings. If this desire is suppressed, it shall have a damaging effect upon man. These desires should therefore be satisfied so that man can rid himself of various limitations and inhibitions. He can then perform his day to day activities efficiently to achieve progress and development.

These words express the misguided thoughts of the enemies of Islam. They have forgotten the Second World War when France had surrendered to Germany in the very first attack. The German forces freely indulged in the satisfaction of their carnal passions. Even the French people began to pray for peace.

Freedom must also have a limit and must be disciplined. If the sexual drive is uncontrolled, man behaves worse than an animal. The defeat of France was also to an extent due to the promiscuous way of life prevalent in France. It is written in the book "Chun France Shikast Khund" (When France was defeated):
"When the German planes started to bomb the French cities, the Prime Minister 'Patrino' tried to contact the Central Headquarter of the air force so that additional bombers could be summoned for defence. He continously tried to phone the Central Headquarters, and each time he dialed the number of the Major on duty, each time the phone was attended by the beloved of the Major, Madam Dolly. Madam Dolly answered the phone and spoke foolishly to the Prime Minister in a demure way whereas there was bloodshed all around, and France was being converted into a sort of Hell.

As far as America is concerned, 38 % of the middle school female students become pregnant. As these girls reach high school, colleges and universities, the incidence of unwanted pregnancies reduce. These girls use their past experiences to avoid getting pregnant. American society is plagued with this evil, but its laws are unable to cope with the situation.

There is no doubt that the sexual urge is a natural instinct, but it must be controlled and disciplined. Islam does not expect the sexual urge to be suppressed, nor does it order anyone to forsake productive activities. On the contrary, Islam is against celibacy. However, Islam, as any other decent society, cannot allow for absolute freedom as seen in the animal kingdom. What Islam does is to lay down the golden rules for the satisfaction and fulfillment of natural desires and instincts such that neither the personal freedom of man is endangered nor is the peace of society disrupted.

There is no doubt that the West is far ahead in the field of science and technology and has progressed and prospered as a result of it. But their success is hollow. The excessive affluence has eroded human values and deluded them to search for happiness in immorality and perversity. Their culture deprives them of true happiness and comfort that comes with peace and stability of mind.

The women of these countries have also taken great strides. They work shoulder to shoulder with men in practically all walks of life. But many of them fail in what is their primary duty, as loyal wives and caring mothers. It is quite common to come across women having extra marital relations and neglecting their home and children. These children deprived of parental love and care in turn search for happiness by following the degraded examples set by their misguided parents and the vicious circle continues. The result is that couples just live together without being married and go their own way when they choose to. If there are marriages, they often end in divorce. The divorce rate in America today is 40 % and is on the increase.

Women have come to occupy high positions in governmental and commercial organisations, but this does not solve the human problems facing these societies. It is a pity that these societies have no guidelines that will help them to realise that their well being lies in maintaining well-knit families where husband and wife care for each other, are loyal to each other and the children are secure and happy. This is what Islam aims to achieve for its followers. By upholding the laws of Islam our lives are automatically channelised into maintaining a healthy family life which provides for physical satisfaction, mental peace and spiritual upliftment, where the family members are a source of strength, solace and comfort to each other.

The Moral Role of Hijab

The Moral Role of Hijab
By: The Religious Authority, Sayyed M.H. Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah

Hijab (the veil) is one of the most important elements of identity in the personality of the Muslim women. Why was it decreed as an obligatory duty?

To understand the reason, we have, at first, to answer the following question: Is it necessary to regulate the relationship between man and women? Or is this relation one of the manifestations of personal freedom that no one has the right to interfere in?

In Western philosophy there is a tendency to give human beings a universal freedom in his relations with the other sex, being a private affair that people have the right to practise without any restrictions.

But Islam, as well as other religions and ideologies, has put certain restrictions on the personal freedom in this field, since unrestrained freedom creates chaos, especially in the domains of linage and family relations. Thus, Islam believes that you have to remain committed to the wellbeing of the society and prepares man psychologically to control his desires, through a set of laws. In this sense, Hijab is one of the regulations that prevent man from living a state of psychological emergency in response to the call of desires. It is a part of the legislative structure that builds moral commitment.

How does Hijab play this role? Hijab creates the psychological atmosphere to resist the calls for deviation, and builds an internal immunity in both men and women. It suggests to the woman that she should present herself as a human being and helps her to do so by veiling her sexual beauties.

It also suggests to the man that he has to consider the woman as a human being only, since he cannot see her body. Thus the Hijab represents to a large extent a means of blocking the roads that lead to deviation.

What does wearing the Hijab involve?

The material Hijab demands that the woman should cover all her body except the face and the hands, and that she should not wear make-up when she goes out. This means that the Hijab has a martial side which involves the covering of the body, and a moral aspect that makes a woman act as a human being in the society, by not being seen in a makeup that draws attention, or by talking in a certain way {If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in (your) speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn;} or by any other means for that matter.

Which is better for a woman to be committed to the material Hijab or the moral one?

The issue is not which is better, since Islam views the Hijab as one integrated unit that has two closely interacting dimensions. On the one hand, it urges women to be committed to the moral Hijab which prevents the woman from deviation, and which is the reason behind ordaining the material Hijab, and on the other hand, it considers the material hijab a kind of protection that protects both man and woman from being affected by the situations that can have negative effect on their morals. This means that leaving the material hijab threatens the moral one, and vice versa. Thus the Hijab is not a personal or individual matter but a social one too, since everything that prevents the individual from deviation, also impacts the society, since the society in the end is the sum of all its individuals and the system of values, principles and regulations that govern their relations.

The man's veil

Why was the veil limited to the women only, knowing that both sexes are a source of attraction to one another?

We do not deny that the man is a source of attraction to the woman just as the woman is to the man, but historical reality has made the woman the only symbol of sexual attraction. She has been raised in all human communities without any exception, on the notion of taking care of her outlook and body being the major source of her value in the future.

This reality that the woman lives, whether based on her psychological characteristics or the social education she receives, has made her a source of attraction while it did not make man as such.

This was not due to the objective elements of attraction in the man or the woman, but it was to a large extent the result of cultural and educational elements, and this is what made the woman an object of attraction in the mind just as it is an object of attraction in reality. And this is probably why Islam has imposed Hijab on the woman only.

Role of education:

How do you comment on those who believe that education is enough in our modern age to create a moral veil?

When we look at the crisis and deviations the contemporary man's experience has produced despite the legal restrictions, we have to say that depending on man's inner deterrents has proved to be a failure. The deviations in the societies that believe in sexual freedom and consider ethical commitment as a personal choice are greater than in those societies that adopt the veil. This is because being affected by ones look is but natural in such a way that getting near the fire one will ultimately burn, or at least becomes vulnerable. There is no difference in this respect between material fire and instinctual fire: when we prepare for a hungry man all the elements that stimulate his apatite, then it is natural that he will respond.

Can't partial nudity be a positive factor in immunizing the society against such stimulants, as the West claims, since its spread will lead man to becoming familiar to it and consequently it will have no effect?

Nudity represents a direct sexual stimulant. It reminds man of sex, and its organs, which makes him stimulated to the extent of community a haram act, even if nudity is common. Since being common does not stop its stimulating effect. The studies in the West prove that the more man wears less clothes, even if he is not completely nude, the more his desire will be aroused. If this is not the case, how can we explain the vast number of rape crimes in a society where relationships are absolutely free to the extent that the girl would bring her boyfriend hope to have sex with him under the very eyes of her parents who would remain indifferent?

Thus we find that nudity, although it might vary between one woman and another, has risen the vitality of the instincts and the demand for sex, when compared with conservative societies, to the extent that we find in some eastern societies where women are almost completely isolated woman are highly evaluated by man. Although there are certain theories that say that deprivation increases the desires, we believe that this is true with respect to the needs that are not deterred by the need of being committed to the values. But when education on values and virtues is practiced, man will not respond in this manner.

Understanding Hijab

Understanding Hijab

What does a young woman demonstrate about herself when she dons a headscarf, but ties it so that bits of hair hang out or her neck or chest are not fully covered, and then matches it with make-up, form-fitting tops, skin-tight jeans, bare forearms, bare feet, heavy perfume, nail polish, high-heels and a $200 handbag?

What does a young man demonstrate about himself when he openly eyes women and talks to his buddies about their bodies, shows off in front of the opposite sex, and looks for chances to engage in physical contact with women freely?

Hijab is a state of mind enjoined upon both men and women in Islam. At the heart of its purpose, Hijab is about maintaining or elevating the dignity of every individual regardless of gender and preserving the ability of individuals to feel the natural sense of modesty, the loss of which is a serious spiritual sickness.

There are two overarching principles to Hijab for men and women according to the Qur'an:

1. Lowering your gaze: This means you should avoid looking at, listening to, or otherwise observing anything that damages your natural sense of modesty and shame, as well as anything that causes you to feel temptation to sin or causes attraction toward someone with whom you could not lawfully act on it.

2. Guarding your modesty: This means you should avoid revealing anything about yourself, whether through how you dress, how you speak, what you say or write, or other means, that would cause damage to your natural sense of modesty and shame, or tempt you to sin, or cause you to be attracted to or to attract someone with whom you could not lawfully act on that attraction.

The requirements of Islamic modest dress are based upon these two principles. Dress should be such that it guards your modesty and aids you in lowering your gaze and does not make it unnecessarily difficult for someone else to lower their gaze and guard their own modesty.

The basic requirements for female dress in public are four:

1. Extent: Everything but your hands and face must be covered. Feet should be covered, as should hair, neck, ears, and arms. Make-up and adornment should be covered, even if that means covering parts that would not otherwise have to be covered. Most scholars say that wedding rings and religious rings need not be covered, but in general, jewelry is adornment and should be concealed.

2. Looseness: The garments should be loose enough so that the shape of your body from at least the shoulders to the mid-thighs is not apparent. Even for the legs, clothes should not be skin-tight. If the fabric follows your curves, it is too tight.

3. Thickness: The clothing should be thick enough that the color of your skin and hair underneath cannot be discerned through the fabric.

4. Style: The clothes should not be of a color, style, or decoration so as to serve the purpose of drawing attention, being adornment, or showing off. Thus, clothes with bright colors, fancy decorations, and expensive fabrics should be avoided. Further, clothes that would be considered as belonging to the opposite gender or to followers of another religion are also excluded. Also, it is improper to be a slave to fashion, spending wastefully for the latest trend, judging and being judged based on style, etc. Simplicity is better for your soul, mind and body.

Men's clothing requirements are exactly the same as women’s, except for the extent that needs to be covered. Jurists' rulings differ slightly in this matter, but as a general guideline, men should cover from navel to knees at a minimum, although a greater extent is preferable in the presence of women, since a greater area than this can be attractive to the opposite sex.

All four requirements hold in the presence of non-mahrams (unrelated members of the opposite sex). It should be noted that, in addition to people of the opposite sex who are not related to you, some relatives are no-mahram as well, and thus Hijab should be observed in front of them. For example, you need to observe Hijab in front of cousins of the opposite gender. If you are a woman, you should observe Hijab in front of brothers-in-law and uncles related by marriage rather than blood. And if you are a man, you should observe Hijab in front of sisters-in-law and aunts related by marriage rather than blood.

When in the presence of mahram individuals only, the requirements for Islamic modest dress are different. Except between spouses, who are permitted to see all of each other's bodies, the extent of covering required between mahram individuals is such that all private areas are covered. Looseness and thickness of clothing should also ensure coverage of the private areas. Adornment such as make-up and jewelry are generally permitted, but if the purpose is to attract, it should be reserved to be shared between married couples only. As for style, the requirements about showing off and about wearing clothes of the opposite gender or of another religion hold at all times.

Hijab requirements do not block women and men from doing business or from attending meetings in the same room as long as they are observing Hijab. However, the lowering of the gaze means when in the presence of non-mahrams, one should avoid looking at them in such a way as to be attracted to their bodies, or listening to them in such a way as to be attracted to their voices, etc. And in turn, the guarding of modesty means that one should behave so as not to be trying to attract the opposite sex, or showing off, or discoursing with them in a familiar way or about private topics.

Even the enemies of Islam have recognized that Hijab of men and women gives dignity to humanity and thus empowers those who observe it. This is one of the main reasons that they systematically attack it and try to convince Muslim men and women to abandon true Hijab. Observing Hijab begins and ends with its two over-riding principles – lowering your gaze and guarding your modesty. These two acts are greatly beneficial to you in both this world and the Hereafter – they protect you from hardship, sin, and confusion and they elevate you spiritually –  and this is why many people who observe Hijab describe it as being very freeing and something they truly love. Examine your interactions and your wardrobe with these two principles in mind, change anything that is out of line, and you will soon be enjoying the benefits in your own life.

Why Do I Wear Hijab?

Why Do I Wear Hijab?

Description: A Muslim woman explains why she has chosen to wear the Hijab, not out of repression, but liberation.
By: Sultana Yusufali

I probably do not fit into the preconceived notion of a “rebel”.  I have no visible tattoos and minimal piercing.  I do not possess a leather jacket.  In fact, when most people look at me, their first thought usually is something along the lines of “oppressed female.”  The brave individuals who have mustered the courage to ask me about the way I dress usually have questions like: “Do your parents make you wear that?” or “Don’t you find that really unfair?”

A while back, a couple of girls in Montreal were kicked out of school for dressing like I do.  It seems strange that a little piece of cloth would make for such controversy.  Perhaps the fear is that I am harboring an Uzi underneath it!  Of course, the issue at hand is more than a mere piece of cloth.  I am a Muslim woman who, like millions of other Muslim women across the globe, chooses to wear the hijab.  And the concept of the hijab, contrary to popular opinion, is actually one of the most fundamental aspects of female empowerment.

When I cover myself, I make it virtually impossible for people to judge me according to the way I look.  I cannot be categorized because of my attractiveness or lack thereof.

Compare this to life in today’s society: We are constantly sizing one another up on the basis of our clothing, jewelry, hair and makeup.  What kind of depth can there be in a world like this?  Yes, I have a body, a physical manifestation upon this Earth.  But it is the vessel of an intelligent mind and a strong spirit.  It is not for the beholder to leer at or to use in advertisements to sell everything from beer to cars!

Because of the superficiality of the world in which we live, external appearances are so stressed that the value of the individual counts for almost nothing.  It is a myth that women in today’s society are liberated!  What kind of freedom can there be when a woman can not walk down the street without every aspect of her physical self being “checked out”?

When I wear the hijab I feel safe from all of this.  I can rest assured that no one is looking at me and making assumptions about my character from the length of my skirt.  There is a barrier between me and those who would exploit me.  I am first and foremost a human being, equal to any man, and not vulnerable because of my sexuality.

One of the saddest truths of our time is the question of the beauty myth and female self-image.  Reading popular teenage magazines, you can instantly find out what kind of body image is “in” or “out.”  and if you have the “wrong” body type, well, then, you’re just going to have to change it, aren’t you?  After all, there is no way that you can be overweight and still be beautiful.

Look at any advertisement.  Is a woman being used to sell the product?  How old is she?  How attractive is she?  What is she wearing?  More often than not, that woman will be no older than her early 20s, taller, slimmer and more attractive than average, dressed in skimpy clothing.  Why do we allow ourselves to be manipulated like this?

Whether the 90s woman wishes to believe it or not, she is being forced into a mold.  She is being coerced into selling herself, into compromising herself.  This is why we have 13-year-old girls sticking their fingers down their throats and overweight adolescents hanging themselves.

When people ask me if I feel oppressed, I can honestly say no.  I made this decision out of my own free will.  I like the fact that I am taking control of the way other people perceive me.  I enjoy the fact that I don’t give anyone anything to look at and that I have released myself from the bondage of the swinging pendulum of the fashion industry and other institutions that exploit females.

My body is my own business.  Nobody can tell me how I should look or whether or not I am beautiful.  I know that there is more to me than that.  I am also able to say “no” comfortably when people ask me if I feel as though my sexuality is being repressed.  I have taken control of my sexuality.  I am thankful I will never have to suffer the fate of trying to lose/gain weight or trying to find the exact lipstick shade that will go with my skin color.  I have made choices about what my priorities are and these are not among them.

So next time you see me, don’t look at me sympathetically.  I am not under duress or a male-worshipping female captive from those barbarous Arabic deserts!  I’ve been liberated.

Hijab Culture for Islamic Clothing in the Sustainable Fashion Limelight

Hijab Culture for Islamic Clothing in the Sustainable Fashion Limelight

Long sustainably-made silk robes, vibrant headscarves fro organic cotton, and intricate lace face veils paint a modest, underground and mystical picture of Muslim fashion. Despite the modest nature of Islamic clothing designed to honour the religion, Muslim attire is adorned with bright designs, bold colours and stunning materials. In recent years Islamic clothing has taken on a more modern element, amalgamating comfort and privacy with style and modernity, crafting hip and stylish individuals of the Islamic faith – and best of all some of these traditions are turning “green”.

The notion of trendy and hip ‘Hijab culture’ has entered mainstream consciousness with the ‘hood and the hijab’ being cool items to be seen in on the streets of London, Birmingham, Manchester and practically everywhere in the UK. And of course around the Middle East too where this modest style was born.

Instead of being a submissive fashion mishap that would be worn by the more reticent members of society, Islamic clothing has been propelled into the fashion limelight, with good reason. And we are hoping this new fashion trend will inspire designers to cover this new trend.

Prolific Muslim fashion bloggers

One of the reasons for the ‘trendifying’ of Islamic clothing and its arrival in mainstream fashion is due to the phenomenal rise of the fashion blogger and, in this case, the growing community of hijab fashion bloggers in places like the UK.

Dina Tokio

Dina Tokio is one influential Muslim fashion bloggers. With her unique style and spirited personality shining through in her writing, Dina has aided the arrival and popularity of a new concept known as the ‘vloger’. Dina’s trademark quirky videos and blog posts and her admittance to being a ‘style hauler’ has certainly contributed to helping the word ‘cosmopolitan’ be associated with Muslim clothing.

Mariam Sobh

Another prominent hijab culture blogger that has helped put this type of clothing in the fashion limelight is Mariam Sobh. Mariam founded Hijab Trendz, which looks through the eyes of a Hijabi fashionista. Talking to the Huffington Post, Mariam Sobh describes the rising presence of Muslim women in mainstream fashion.

“I went ahead and started this blog [Hijab Trendz] where I felt like I could have an outlet for Muslim women like myself, who grew up reading Seventeen and Cosmo and we never felt like we exactly fit in,” said the fashion blogger.

A form of self-expression for Muslim women

Fashion provides a platform of self-expression for everyone wanting to exploit it, with those of the Islamic faith being no exception. Muslim stylist, Yasmine Yasmine has also been an influential figure in changing the connotations associated with hijab fashion and asserts that clothing provides an outlet for self-identity and expression for many women. Yasmine Yasmine also says that fashion helps others engage with Muslim women. The stylist uses the example of a woman of the Islamic faith carrying a Chanel bag breaking the connotations that many may uphold about Muslim women avoiding such ‘western’ associations.

So what exactly is the Hijab style?

This delicate, intricate and thoroughly unique fashion niche includes Hijabs, Julbabs and Abayas, as well as an array of beautiful hand-craft jewellery. These stunningly unique handmade accessories can be worn by many different age ranges and are suitable for many different occasions.

Abayas

Modern Abayas are adorned with sequins and beads in floral and geometric patterns. These decorative garments are striking and eye-catching and are particularly appealing to the younger generation of Islamic women.

Jilbabs

Jilbabs have undergone a modern makeover in recent years creating a new appeal, especially to the western Muslim female. Combining cotton and linen with lavish fabrics, modern jilbabs are eye-catching, exciting and alluring.

Hijabs

Another staple of Islamic clothing for women is the hijab. Similar to the other Islamic fashion staples, the modern hijab infuses traditionalism with more modern elements such as flowing floral prints set against shimmery metallic fabrics.

Islam Shopping Centre nurtures this rising demand for modern, stylish yet elegantly unique Islamic clothing generated through the increasing presence of Hijab culture. Look out for environmentally-friendly products.
